How Is Child Support Calculated in Tennessee?

The average amount of child support needed in Tennessee is called the Basic Child Support Obligation (BSCO). This mainly covers food, housing, and transportation but also takes into account a share of expenditures on clothing and entertainment. It also covers educational expenses like field trips, books, and school fees.

The BSCO does not include the following:

  • Work-related child care costs
  • Child’s health insurance premiums
  • Uninsured medical expenses
  • Extraordinary educational expenses
  • Special expenses

The reason these expenses are not included in the BSCO is because they can vary so much from child to child. When calculating the BSCO, the parent’s gross income is the starting point.

The following is a sample of what is calculated:

  • Salary or wages
  • Commissions
  • Tips
  • Fringe benefits
  • Bonuses
  • Severance
  • Pensions
  • Retirement plans
  • Disability or retirement benefits from Social Security
  • Workers’ compensation
  • Lottery winnings

Once all sources of income for the parent have been added together, credits such as pre-existing child support orders and existing child support orders are subtracted from the amount. Then, the total gross income is cross-referenced with the Child Support Schedule which gives the BSCO that both parents must provide. How Long Does Child Support Last?

When the child turns 18 or graduates from high school, the obligation to pay child support ends. If the child quits school and gets a job or if the child gets married, the support would also end. However, in some cases, such as if the child is disabled, continuing support might be possible.
